Hi Eric; there is an excellent book "Steelpan Playing with Theory" by Salah Wilson. He is a professional panist, educator...… from Trinidad, living in Canada.
You can buy the book at steelpanplus.com/salahpan--contact.html. I have included some pictures of the book's cover, chapter topics. Very complete book.
Hey Rey, I do have Salah's book. It is excellent, He does touch on improvisation in the last 4 pages. But what I am interested in is more advanced techniques. For example taking a solo recording by -say Andy Narrel - and analyzing the self accompaniment or certain kind of fast runs, how to incorporate melody and chords, maybe even using 4 mallets -that kind of thing.
Sounds like you're looking for theory? I tackled very tiny pieces of theory in a few short videos. I don't think it'll go as deep as you want. But here's the 7th chord arpeggio video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPGIRvXo6_E
And if you're into Latin Jazz, this is another video I came up with for one of my tunes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGU8NqyI4YE
I know this doesn't actually help, but this is something I'm working on putting together! Good to know there is a need for it!

I play double tenor and am looking to buy quality backtracks with corresponding sheet music to add to my repertoire. I'm a strict reader and weak with improv. Brad Shores has been a Big help and I have all 9 of his books. Any other suggestions for expanding my repertoire? Thanks!

Alternate Mode Pan KAT
Up for auction is a Pan KAT Midi Steel Drum that I used to play reggae tunes. I have had the Pan KAT for 10 + years but really only used it for about a year to play solo steel drum and some Jimmy Buffett tunes for friends (I am a guitar player). The original unit cost about $1,800 without the case and I am offering it up for $825 plus shipping. I used an older Roland MIDI sampler (not included) for the steel drum sounds but IndigiSounds (YouTube link…

So there are lots of books and videos on how to play pan - all the ones I've seen are for beginners. Anybody know of Advanced technique books? I see LiamTteague does a beginner book- I would love for him to do one for more advanced players.
